New release of AP Mobile for Android available today!

It took a little longer than we expected, but we’ve made some great progress towards improving our AP Mobile for Android app. The first step was to improve the stability and performance, and I am happy to announce that we have released an update today (v3.2.3.1) that addresses both in a big way.

You will find the following in the update:

  • Dramatic performance and stability improvements
  • Improved story and photo transitions
  • Localization for Spanish/French language content and menu items
  • New AP Branding
  • Bug Fixes

You will continue to see updates shortly that include the addition of some exciting new features that are currently only available on our iOS app as well as some user interface tweaks to optimize the viewing experience and improve the overall look and feel.

You can find the app in Google Play and the Amazon App Store, and shortly in GetJar, Vodafone App store and Samsung App store.

We hope you like the update!  We are committed to becoming the best mobile news source and welcome your feedback (we can be reached at apmobile@ap.org).

AP Mobile update on BlackBerry now available in App World! We’re consolidating titles.

We are updating AP Mobile on BlackBerry with a new design and new features!

UPGRADERS:  Please DELETE the old versions of AP Mobile first before installing the new one.  This will mitigate any upgrading issues since the new app is a new code base.

New Blackberry features in AP Mobile:

- Choose to get breaking news alerts to your inbox or as a pop-up

- Share stories via Facebook, Twitter and BBM (for users with OS 5.0 and above, and BBM 6.0 and above)

- Watch AP videos

- Change regions and choose languages including English, Spanish and French

NOTE:  We will be retiring the AP Mobile World Edition, AP Mobile en Espanol, AP Movil America Latina, and just using the one title, AP Mobile.  So users of these titles should delete those versions and update to the new AP Mobile app (v3.5 and above).  The new version is still FREE!

Why are we doing this you might ask? Simple, some of the old versions do not support newer devices. Some apps were not global or have multiple languages. They did not support video, push alerts or photo galleries. It was also expensive to maintain all of those titles, so we have simplified things and will support only AP Mobile going forward. AP MObile does all of these things. The other titles and older versions will no longer receive content as of May 21, 2012.

We know that change an be difficult but this is a necessary move. We hope you understand.

As always we’d love to hear from you.

AP Mobile for iOS now with support for iPad retina display!

  • Full support for the new iPad Retina display with hi-res photos!
  • Fixes Twitter share bug
  • Fixes bug that some users noticed with photo loading
  • Various stability improvements
  • Streamlined the list view so that it is less cluttered

There will be additional features and functionality coming soon.

As always, we are committed to becoming the best mobile news source and welcome your feedback (we can be reached at apmobile@ap.org).

Businessinsider.com conference highlights the “Future of Mobile”

Last week Businessinsider.com held a very informative conference in San Francisco called IGNITION WEST: Future of Mobile. The conference covered mobile trends in the past, present, and future predictions and provided great analysis on the future of mobile and apps. To kick off the conference, the BI Intelligence team  including Pascal-Emmanuel Gobry, Alex Cocotas and Henry Blodget presented a slideshow on the current trends in mobile in which they looked closely at the growth of smartphones and tablets, the platform wars, and how consumers are actually using their devices. It was an eye-opener for anyone who does not see mobile devices as the leader of digital technology and also gives a lot of great, insight into mobile trends we can expect in the next few years.

According to the BI Intelligence team’s deck, in 2011 smartphones and tablets sold much more units than personal computers (including laptops). With the growing technology behind handheld devices, many models of smartphones and tablets are capable of handling anything that a personal computer does.  Given mobile devices’ ease of portability, personal computers may soon become a thing of the past, or at least confined to work spaces only.

The big picture is that smartphones and tablets are the preferred device of consumers on how they intake digital media.  Emails, videos, social media, news, and everything in between is just as easily accessible from a portable device than a laptop, if not more so. Speed and quality is no longer an issue either: Today’s smartphones are more powerful than the laptops and desktops from 3 years ago. All this being said, AP Mobile is happy to be on the forefront of this digital mobile age. You can view BI’s deck on the conference here.
